Remembering Family
In the month of October it seems as though most of my family has a birthday. It starts out with a nephew, Norm on the 2nd, the 7th was an ex-in-law, mine is the 9th, Grandma Garrett was the 10th (today), the 14th is another ex-in-law, the 15th was my brother Joe's, Aunt Jenny's was the 25th, then comes a step-son's the 26th, the 30th is my sister Loretta's and to end the month out on the 31st is an ex-husband.
The one that prompted this blog is Grandma Garrett. She would have been 125 years old today. What amazes me when I think of Grandma Garrett is that she was born in the 1800's. I think of that being a loooooong time ago (which it was), but for her when she was alive it wasn't. It just was when she was born. Now fast forward to 1997. Our oldest grandson was born in September of that year. This was in the last century (Grandma Garrett was born in the century before), so when this grandson is 'old' he will think that the 20th century wasn't really all that long ago, but his grandkids and especially his great-grandkids will think he is really ancient :).
My memories of Grandma Garrett are sweet. She was an 'old' lady (probably in her late 70's to early 80's) when I was a teen, but a very active 'old' lady. She loved flowers. I think she had an acre of land planted in all types of flowers and every time we went to visit my mother came home with some type of plant for her garden. I also remember the 'chicken coop'. That was where all the 'old' pieces of furniture ended up when they were no longer needed in the house. We came home with several pieces of that 'old' furniture over the years too! She also wore her hair in braids wrapped around her head. I only remember seeing her hair down once in all the times we visited. She had a big round table in her kitchen that had a metal sugar bowl with a dent in it sitting in the center of that big round table. Grandma Garrett also had an outhouse (not a flush toilet) that was attached to the house, but you had to walk through the back room to get to it. Of course there wasn't any heat out there and you never wanted to take anything to read. It was cold in the winter, hot in the summer and of course had a very nasty odor... Grandma Garrett's last years were lived in a nursing home and she suffered from Alzheimer's. I can't remember how old she lived to be, but she was in her 90's and am so glad to have had a chance to know this remarkable lady and call her Grandma!

Actress, Virginia Gregg
Since we have been watching TV on an old fashioned antenna instead of cable or satellite we have reconnected with old favorites. We watch Perry Mason, Ironside, The Rifleman, Emergency, Hawaii 5-O, Gunsmoke, The Big Valley, Dragnet, M*A*S*H, Daniel Boone, Bonanza, Adam-12, Cannon, F-Troop, Kojak, The Rebel, Remington Steele, The Rockford Files, The Streets of San Francisco, The Twilight Zone, Wagon Train, Rawhide, and Colombo to name a few.
One of my favorite actresses that shows up on a regular basis is Virginia Gregg. Most people don't recognize her name like they do the major stars such as Raymond Burr, Chuck Connors, Jack Lord, James Arness, Barbara Stanwyck, Jack Webb, William Conrad, Pierce Brosnan, Peter Falk, or Clint Eastwood, but we see her on may shows over and over.
Dragnet is one of the shows that she shows up on in all types of parts. She is one of the most versatile actresses I have seen. She may not have been a headliner, but she was one busy lady. We also have a lot of old radio show programs that she has a part in. The only time I haven't recognized her voice is when she plays Rick's girlfriend Helen Asher on Richard Diamond, Private Detective. One thing I didn't realize until I read Wikipedia was that she was the voice of Mrs. Bates on the Psycho movies. If I was so inclined to be an actor I would want to be her!

On the road again!
This is the week that the Maricopa Quilt Shops have their shop hop that I like to go on. Also, the Tucson Quilt, Craft and Sewing Festival was going on. I have been to the Phoenix show several times, but not the Tucson show so off we went on Friday. Some of the sites we saw were cool. The clouds look soft and fluffy, but it has always fascinated me when I see the shadows on the ground. The first time I saw this it took me a couple minutes to realize why I was seeing areas of darkness on the ground. Where I grew up in central NY State the only time I saw the shadows was when it was right over me, not miles away as it is in this picture.
Then of course we can't forget a neat mountain shape.
This area is the only spot in Arizona that the Civil War was fought.
I am so thankful that there are interesting sites around me that I can enjoy. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.

Happy Birthday Julie!
It doesn't seem possible that it has been 38 years since I made that visit to Auburn Hospital Maternity Ward! I didn't want to go because I just knew that I'd be pregnant for the rest of my life, but you had different ideas! I have been so blessed having you as my daughter and I love you 'whole bunches'! I sure hope you have a great day!

Sites around me.....
In NY the salt mine is on the east side of Cayuga Lake. I have never been close to see what it looks like, but have been told it is also under the lake. I checked out MapQuest and it doesn't give me an up close shot, but all I can see is buildings and open pits. It doesn't look anything like the MapQuest of Arizona's Morton Salt Mine. This has been here since we moved here, but until a couple years ago I didn't pay any attention to this area. We never go past the sign at the main entrance so I never saw the 'Morton Salt Company' sign, but I think that the Morton Salt girl with the umbrella is a tell....

This is what I see when I am traveling back and forth to work. The white mountain of salt changes in size day to day. I have no idea how they are getting the salt out of the ground. After I looked on MapQuest I noticed there are several large bodies of water around this plant. I'm not sure how they get the salt out of the water, but one picture looks like they drain the 'ponds' and then scrape the salt off the bottom.
I love looking at the sites that are around me all the time. For so many years I was just zipping right on by some fabulous sites in my rush to get to where I was going. It is a lot more fun to enjoy the trip not just the destination.
If you start checking out the sites around you as you head to your destination, you may find some neat things!

Happy Labor Day!
It doesn't seem possible that it was 1 year ago today that Carl made his second and most serious trip to the ER. The next 5 days were a fun time arguing with nurses and doctors that just didn't want to listen. I was never so happy to get him home then after this hospital stay!
This year we spend a much nicer weekend. Yesterday we had a picnic with Kelly, Coby and their families. We went over to Gateway Park in El Mirage. They have a 'splash' and picnic areas. I was really surprised that it wasn't a lot busier. I guess that it isn't used as much on holiday weekends as other parks. I know that the parking lot is usually filled in the evening when I come home from work.
I have been busy in the sewing room this weekend. You need to go on over to my Quilting World tab and check out what I have been up to.
Friday as we were going to an appointment we saw the steam from Palo Verde Nuclear Plant. It is really cool to see. We don't even think about it any other time.
